Her name is Terria Smith and she has just accepted the position of director of the Berkeley Roundhouse, Heyday’s California Indian publishing and events program. She’ll be editing News from Native California (this is her first issue), acquiring and developing books, partaking in and originating events, and witnessing, reporting on, and nourishing Indian life in California—in short doing great and significant work and, I expect, having a lot of fun doing it. Terria has been an important part of the California Indian community for many years, and I am sure that many of our readers already know her. For those who don’t, let me give this brief introduction. Terria is Cahuilla from the Torres Martinez Reservation. She has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Humboldt State and a master’s in journalism from UC Berkeley and has contributed to NPR, Native Peoples, The Desert Sun, and News from Native California, where she has also served as a contributing editor. For the last three years, she has worked as editor/producer/tribal liaison for FNX, a national television network devoted to Native American culture. She’s an active member of the Native American Journalists Association and for many years has been engaged in tribal social welfare and cultural survival projects throughout the state. On a personal note, I’m having difficulty as I write these words maintaining a professional posture, practicing something I’ve never been very good at: restraint. I’m pecking away at the keys of a computer doing my best to stick close to the resume and not embarrass Terria by giving into the exuberance I feel and saying how much I enjoy her mind, her sassy wisdom, her deep emotional connection with a place and its people, her compassion, the flashes of anger that show when she’s confronted with meanness, her humor, her skill, her emotional depths, and her playfulness—in short, how proud I am that she has decided to join us and how much I look forward to her shaping News in the years to come. But, hey, I don’t have to say any of this because you will have the opportunity to see for yourself. —Malcolm Margolin, Publisher Copyright © 2015 by News from Native California except where otherwise noted.
