DESIGN AWARDS
RECOGNISING EXCELLENCE IN DESIGN
The Trends International Design Awards are an opportunity to recognise outstanding homes in a variety of countries.
The two homes featured here illustrate the diversity of design that architects can achieve in response to the sites they
are presented with. Mason & Wales' hilltop house in Queenstown has all that you could possibly want in a holiday
home – while Mitsuori Architects' guest house is a quirky design on a very different scale.
NEW ZEALAND ARCHITECT-DESIGNED NEW HOME
WINNER
MASON & WALES
Faced with the challenge of an extremely steep site,
architect Francis Whitaker has designed a house with a
solid grounding – and a glass and steel pavilion perched
on top. The award-winning result is a long narrow home
that takes full advantage of stunning lake views.
AUSTRALIAN ARCHITECT-DESIGNED NEW HOME
HIGHLY COMMENDED
MITSUORI ARCHITECTS
The brief called for a guest house, positioned at the end
of a tennis court. Mitsuori Architects' result is totally
unexpected, having louvred sides with the flexibility
to open or close to varying degrees so as to keep the
interior climate comfortable.
