This home connects easily with its environment
through natural-styled aluminium windows

designed for maximum views and
sun, with the main rooms arranged
around the north axis – as such,
window and door treatments were a
key part of its success.

Nestled amongst mature pohutukawa trees,
this generous home is perched on a clifftop with
scenic outlooks across Auckland’s Hobson Bay.
The residence’s east-facing windows were
designed with large fixed glass panels to accentuate the views, says architect Robyn Bilkey.
Bilkey chose anodised aluminium joinery,
from Windowmakers’ APL Architectural Series,
to complement the home’s natural colour palette – grey pre-cast concrete panels mimicking
the striations of the cliff below the home, and
vertical dark stained, random thickness cedar
boards reflecting the texture and shadows of

the pohutukawa around the established site.
“The finish is also a reference to the old black
baches with white joinery of New Zealand’s
classic and casual mid-century,” says Bilkey.
Windowmakers played a vital part in
ensuring her vision for the house was fulfilled
from start to finish. For example, the company
enhanced the main entrance by designing a
custom door with rustic stained-cedar battens –
blending it in with the home’s cladding.
