FEATURES True Cost Economics The single greatest deficiency in our personal or citizen education is to be found in the area of true cost economics. Pioneered by Dr. Herman Daly, whose works on Ecological Economics, For the Common Good, and Valuing the Earth still stand as foundation stones, the true cost concept is illustrated below. It took a year of on and off research by JZ Liskiewicz to achieve this understanding. Others have worked hard on “the secret life of beef” and there is greater understanding of how a vegan diet is better for both the human and the Earth, but we have a very long way to go – my vision is for a hand-held application to show the true cost of any product at the point of sale. Collective Intelligence I credit Tom Atlee and his first book, The Tao of Democracy: Using Co-Intelligence to Create a World that Works for All, that opened my eyes to the possibilities of classical pure democracy as an informed engaged citizen possibility. More recently he has published Empowering Public Wisdom: A Practical Vision of Citizen-Led Politics. I created the graphic below before I was introduced to Tom’s work, but it captures a vision he and I share, of returning to the practices of our indigenous forebearers including inclusive democracy – everyone has a voice and vote – and long-term “seventh-generation” thinking. 45 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW
