new church life: september / october 2013 Student Life: Dr. Marcy Latta is the Resident Manager for Grant Hall. New hires in Childs Hall include Abraham Joseph as Resident Manager and Dale Smith as Assistant Manager Chapel program: Chaplain Thane Glenn continues to work with students to develop offerings and environments that support students as they explore social, intellectual and spiritual worlds during their years on campus. A small chapel space was recently renovated (largely using student and alumni volunteers) for weekly meditation services, spiritual growth meetings, spiritual discussion groups and personal reflection. A peer listening program trains students to provide support for one another. Increased student musical participation has enhanced the chapel offerings. Athletics will sponsor 10 varsity sports in the coming year: men’s and women’s cross country, basketball, lacrosse and tennis, women’s volleyball, men’s soccer and one intercollegiate club sport (hockey). Yoga, health and new offerings in intramural sports are also helping our students stay fit and centered. Our student athletes held an average GPA of 2.97 last year (slightly higher than the overall average in the school), and participated in more than 20 service events. The beautiful new soccer field, which has been taking shape over the summer, will be ready for play in spring 2014. We refer to it as the soccer field because soccer requires the largest space for play, but all manner of sports will be played on the field. Sustainability: The rain garden beside the Doering Center will be fully established in two years. We are working on composting initiatives, recycling, energy efficiency measures and other sustainable and organic practices. Student work on the vegetable garden, Bryn Athyn Bounty market, and the north campus broiler project all add important new dimensions to campus life. Students recently designed and established a small correspondence garden at the president’s house, based on Apocalypse Explained 481. academy secondary schools Susan Odhner, Jeremy Irwin, Principals We headed into the 2013-14 academic year with several new faces on campus.
