three-phase UPS system at 100kVA installed eight years ago. It may well have been oversized to run at no more than 80kVA, a load profile size specified and based on server specification data sheets that was never actually reached. As servers were upgraded to more powerful virtualised environments, the load profile almost halves to say less than 40kVA as physical hardware is removed from the installation. A single tranformerless 60kVA UPS run at 40kVA load would more than power the load and show a potential energy saving of 25-35 per cent. Upgrading to a newer UPS system can produce such a saving because a more modern transformerless design can achieve 95 per cent or greater energy efficiency over a wider load range (25-100 per cent) compared to an 8-10 year old system. Older UPS systems would most likely be operating at less than 70 per cent efficiency at lower loads and potentially only reach 91-92 per cent under optimal conditions. Modular UPS systems – nowadays always-based on transformerless designs – achieve the same high levels of energy efficiency with an added advantage. They can also be used to easily add the higher levels of power resilience that were once only available to large data centre installations. It does complicate matters slightly as modular systems tend to be kilo-Watt (kW) rated than in kVA but taking our example, two 40kW UPS modules could be installed in an N+1 configuration. Using a frame size that can take either three or five modules not only provides resilience, but also an easily scalable configuration for future system expansion. Conclusion According to a 2013 European Commission SME Performance Review, almost half the UK economy is generated by small-to-medium sized enterprises of which there were 4.9million, employing over 14,424,000 people. If only 80 per cent operate a server environment and sign-up to energy improvement programmes, either to comply with legislation or energy bill discount schemes it will go some way to stabilising the UK power grid, reducing both demand and carbon generation.
