The effect data hyper growth is having on enterprise
storage strategies and the role of object storage.
With the popularity of rich media, the proliferation
of mobile devices and the digitisation of content,
there has been an exponential growth in the amount
of unstructured data that IT is now managing. This
growth does not appear to be slowing down, but
instead is accelerating.
Object storage has established itself in the storage
market in response to these challenges, offering what
IDC refers to as “a promising future for organisations
trying to balance scale, complexity and costs”. Almost
all of us are already object storage users in one way or
another, whether it’s working on Google Docs, sharing
files via Dropbox, pictures with Instagram or checking
Twitter.
As a market, it is also predicted that we will see
further growth, to be precise, a further 27 per cent over
the next four years with the likes of Facebook, Netflix
and Amazon deploying object storage. This only shows
that there is a global brand momentum and some
fundamental business and technology trends are
driving its development.

When downtime is not an option
George Osborne has recently declared that 2016 is the
year of ‘mission critical.’ In the consumerisation era,
the scope of mission-critical computing has expanded
to include a proliferation of customer-facing, mobile
and social-enabled applications. The sheer number of
these applications has expanded customer
touch-points and these services are hosted in our big
data centres. Therefore, downtime in data centres
is not an option. We explore how to keep essential
compute services fully operational.

Tapping every rack
The importance of monitoring traffic within the
data centre is becoming more and more imperative.
Network tools are now available to inspect every
aspect of a packet to test for threats and anomalies.
But these tools come at a premium price – and
typically they are needed in multiple locations within
the DC network. Is that cost prohibitive? Once again,
