is set for quite a transformation in terms of the shape and function , as we understand it today .
Before the IoT becomes a reality , 5G needs to happen . For example , for there to be driverless cars in widespread use across our towns and cities the infrastructure for 5G has to be in place and this is purely because the car makes decisions based on real-time information . For example , if there is an accident or a diversion in place the car needs to communicate with the cloud in order to re-route . A driverless car processes approximately 10GB of data per driven mile , and it ’ s estimated that 5 % of this data will need to transfer to and from cloud-based services .
Fast forward to 2020 and the first rollout of 5G , by which time IoT applications and the market will have expanded dramatically . Also , the cloud model changes described will have happened . Standards are still to be finalised and are likely to become clearer in the next 12 – 24 months when the pilots begin , but it could be 2023 before full coverage is available . Daisy chaining features may be used to bring perceived coverage faster .
The ultra-broadband world will see being securely connected even more critical than it is today . Users and IoT devices are predicted to be using the Internet and secure private networking in radical new ways compared with today . With much more intelligence being instilled and processed at the edge , and as such , wireless solutions will play a pivotal role due to its low operational costs , flexibility and quick installation capabilities . A wireless network can be in place in just hours but fibre connection can take weeks or even months .
What will 5G look like ? 5G will create an ‘ intelligent pipe ’ concept in mobile connectivity by maximising bandwidth and spectrum . It will focus on offering high data speeds ( from one to 10 Gbps ) and while the University of Surrey claims to have managed
