5G is set to ignite the future of always connected productivity by providing a catalyst for the next phase of the mobile first revolution
This year ’ s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas was dominated by connected cars and devices all designed to keep up with our increasingly mobile lives . These will in turn drive exponential growth in bandwidth to satisfy the growing demands of mobile work forces , Internet of Things ( IoT ), and Artificial Intelligence ( AI ) driven automation of everything from agriculture to parcel delivery .
In the 2016 Autumn Statement , Chancellor Philip Hammond committed £ 740m to the development of 5G and the further rollout of ‘ fibre to the property connections ’ whether they ’ re business or residential . There ’ s no firm date for the launch of 5G , but it ’ s rumoured to be around 2020 and the dramatic bandwidth increases this new technology will bring are simply mind-blowing .
5G will be superfast – it ’ s thought that it will be between 50 to 75 times faster than 4G in order to cope with the huge rise expected in connected devices using the 5G network . According to Gartner Research , there will be 20.8 billion of them by 2020 so fibre alone won ’ t be able to cope as the main medium of connectivity or , in fact , be the best way for devices to connect . By the time 5G is a reality , connected devices will form an even stronger part of the way we live and work than today and we ’ ll want to use them wherever
