Technology typically associated with data centres is becoming more widespread across a range of industries and applications
In recent years , the role of data centres has changed significantly . This has been triggered by a wide range of developments , including the rise of ‘ Big Data ’, the Internet of Things , new ways of ( remote ) working and the vast uptake of portable computing devices such as tablets and smartphones . These changes are causing some major shifts for our society and economy . Just consider the way we rely on Internet banking , payments and online shopping , how the media and entertainment industry have changed completely , or consider ‘ disruptive ’ innovations such as Uber and Airbnb .
Innovation is key Let ’ s look at one specific area : healthcare . Taking the step changes in the scientific medical research industry into account , it ’ s fundamental that the technology this relies on also advances and evolves . Groundbreaking research into treatments for cancers and next-generation gene sequencing will lead to new drugs and therapies . We ’ re also seeing a vast change in behaviour , leading to innovation and development of mobile technology that will enable the use of mobile medical apps and disease-detecting wearable medical devices .
