NEWS IN BRIEF

DataHub Biel shortlisted for DCS Award 2018

DataHub Biel , a new Tier 3 , High-Density data centre located in Switzerland , has been shortlisted as a finalist for the New Design / Build Data Centre Project of the Year at the renowned DCS Awards 2018 .
The 4.5MW facility , which opens for business shortly , contains 3000m2 of technical space , with an average power density of 5kW / rack , which is unique in the region . It relies on an integrated , energy efficient data centre infrastructure solution from Schneider Electric , which includes Power , Cooling , UPS , Okken Switchgear and Data Centre Infrastructure Management ( DCIM ) software .
DataHub Biel had to embrace high standards in terms of the equipment and services it provides and in addition to high-speed connectivity and ultra reliability , the new facility set a number of key requirements , which included : high-density operations , given the cost of real estate in the region ; efficiency of operation to keep operational costs to a minimum ; and adherence to the highest possible environmental standards .
The facility is the first data centre in Switzerland to make use of Lithium-Ion battery technology through deployment of Schneider Electric ’ s Galaxy VX UPS systems . Not only do they take up less floor space to maximize the deployment of customer IT , but performance is efficient due to the UPS + 98 % ECOnversion mode .
The cooling system at DataHub Biel was designed to be efficient
and resilient with 2N redundancy on air-conditioning units and extra large units to access free-cooling potential . It uses Schneider Electric ’ s high-density racks , Hot-Aisle containment ( HAC ) and In- Row cooling , which have the advantage of permitting high space utilisation in contrast with other competing data centres using the Cold Aisle approach . The combination of tightly controlled cooling , HAC and continuous monitoring provide an exceptionally low PUE rating of between 1.15 and 1.17 . n

Each new data centre adds up to £ 436m per year to UK economy

In the most comprehensive , first of its kind look at the contribution that data provides to the UK economy , an independent report commissioned by Digital Realty reveals that the UK ’ s data economy is currently worth £ 73.3 billion annually . This figure reflects how data is making businesses ’ existing services simpler , faster and more reliable , as well as enabling them to open up new business possibilities , such as new operating models , new revenue streams and new markets .
The Data Economy Report also highlights the continued contribution data brings , with growth ( 7.3 %) outstripping the wider economy ( 1.8 %). This growth is powered by the UK ’ s data centre industry – the industry creates between £ 291 million and £ 320 million in value every year from each data centre , with the range even higher for new data centres : £ 397- £ 436 million in extra annual value .
Data centres create this value by providing and managing the infrastructure , connectivity and services that underpin success across the full range of economic activity . Investment in the data centre foundations is essential for the future prosperity . n

Munters launches new cooling technology

Munters has launched a new cooling technology into the Data Centre industry . SyCool ITC , Indirect Thermosyphon Cooling , provides an efficient cooling solution for new and existing data centres where access to a suitable water supply may be limited , expensive or unreliable .
Designed specifically for data centres and driven by industry demand , SyCool ITC ( patent pending ) uses the waste heat from the data centre and a combination of gravity and a syphon effect , to drive a refrigeration cycle capable of operating without pumps or compressors , providing remarkable levels of energy efficiency . Initially launched as a packaged Air Handling Unit ( AHU ) system , subsequent versions of SyCool will include ‘ Split Systems ’, such as above-aisle modules and perimeter CRAH units , providing scalable cooling for new build and retrofit applications . SyCool ITC also eliminates the potential risk of contamination from air pollutants . n
