E Peripheral Heart Action Training with Stephen Parker Developed in the 1940s and popularised by the body building world in the 1960s, Peripheral Heart Action (PHA) training is designed to keep blood circulating around the entire body during the workout, which keeps the overall intensity high. Typically, exercises for the upper body and lower body are alternated to keep the blood shunting through the major muscles, but you can also include core exercises. PHA training does not create a ‘muscle burn’, which makes the workout more tolerable for new exercisers. 36 | NETWORK SPRING 2014
