Our Island Classroom: Non-Profits and Museums
Finding Unique Ways to Work with Students and
Adults on Nantucket Island
9:00 am – 5:00 pm
Take the Hy-Line high-speed ferry to enjoy a day on
beautiful Nantucket Island. In the morning, you’ll visit the
acclaimed Nantucket Whaling Museum for a tour and panel
discussion with representatives from the Artists Association
of Nantucket, Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum,
Nantucket Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum, Nantucket
Historical Association, and the Maria Mitchell Association.
Learn how non-profits on an isolated island work with
island schools, children, and adults in unique and
innovative ways. After lunch you can remain in town for a
walking tour of the Old Historic District or venture to the
museums of panel participants via provided transportation.
Fee of $85 includes ferry to/from Hyannis, transportation
on the island, and lunch.
Steering Your Museum to a Successful Future:
Sustainable Growth, Strategic Planning, and
Actions for Small Museums in Tough Times
12:00 – 2:30 pm
Small museum folks: this one’s for you! Enjoy a box
lunch and tour of the historic Alden House and First Site
in Duxbury, plus a one-hour seminar to discuss small
museum growth in tough times, including projects and
processes to thrust small museums ahead and new
strategies for getting there.
Fee of $25 includes lunch, guided tour, and program.
How to Move a Museum: Martha’s Vineyard Museum
12:20 – 5:45 pm
Set sail to Martha’s Vineyard for an afternoon sure
to inspire. You’ll tour the construction site of the new
Martha’s Vineyard Museum with an emphasis on
collections storage solutions and spaces. Then, using
the museum as case study, a panel session will provide
an overview of the complex process of collections move
planning, preparation, and execution. From assessing the
space required to store a scattered and poorly housed
collection, through the process of inventory, rehousing
and reassessment of space needs, coordination with
architects and contractors, packing, and moving, the
panelists will share their experiences on this project and
others with which they have been involved.
Fee of $20 includes ferry to/from Martha’s Vineyard,
generously provided by the Steamship Authority, plus
transportation on the island. Lunch is on your own.
Tour of Cape Cod’s Arts Campus: The Cape Cod
Museum of Art, Cape Cinema & Cape Playhouse
12:30 pm – 3:30 pm
Join us for an afternoon that includes a light lunch, a
tour of the Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dennis, including
Mysteries and Revelations: Telling the Truth through
Cape Cod’s Museum Treasures, a collaborative exhibition
that presents a cross-section of artifacts from Cape Cod’s
art, science, and history museums, organized specifically
for NEMA participants. You’ll also see the Rockwell Kent
ceiling at the Cape Cinema and the backstage of the
91-year-old Cape Playhouse, where Gregory Peck, Bette
Davis, Henry Fonda, and many others performed! There
will be time to enjoy the coffee shops, bistros, galleries,
gift shops, and boutiques within walking distance.

Crazy Collection Chronicles: What's your Story?
7:00 – 8:30 pm
Ever had a haunted artifact in your collection?
How about one connected to scandal, legend, or
celebrity? Every museum person seems to have a
favorite collection story, from doorstep donations
with “strings attached” to perplexing provenance
adventures. What’s yours? Join the fun at NEMA’s
annual pre-opening meetup, where you’ll have a
chance to enjoy a drink, share your “tales from the
trenches,” and maybe win the “Crazy Collection
Chronicle” grand prize. So bring your best collection
story (or just listen and vote for your favorite) and
get ready for a fun kickoff to #NEMA2017.
