By far the most popular
sport in Belgium is football.
The second most popular
sport is cycling.
The third most popular
sport is tennis.
R.S.C. Anderlecht is the
most successful Belgian
team in the European
Division. Other big teams
are Bruges (Brugge) and
Standard (Liège).
Every year, close on
20 000 amateur cyclists
tackle a combination of
cobble stones, 180 degree
turns and 15% climbs in
an attempt to conquer the
hills of Flanders (Ronde van
Vlaanderen). Our local hero
is Tom Boonen who has
won the ‘Hell of Flanders‘
three times.
That’s not to say we all like
to play tennis; it’s more of
a spectator sport. Over the
past 10 years, Belgium has
produced players like Kim
Clijsters and Justine Henin
who are former number 1,
multiple grand-slam winners.
Both retired from tennis a
few years ago and restarted
with immediate success in
their second tennis career.
The incredibly popular
coach, Eric Gerets (exdefender who played for
Milan and PSV Eindhoven)
and the best goalkeeper of
his time, Jean-Marie Pfaff
(who played for Bayern
Munich and others), are
some of our greatest
football stars.

The most famous Belgian
cyclist is Eddy Merckx. He
is internationally regarded
as the greatest and most
successful cyclist of all time.
