million. It is home to around 22%
of Sweden’s total population and
accounts for about 29% of the
country’s gross domestic product.

The geography of “Stockholm”
has changed a lot over the
years. During the 18th and 19th
centuries, Stockholm was made up
of the area we know as the City
Centre, which is about one fifth of
the current municipal area. Over
time, other areas like Brännkyrka
(1913) and Spånga (1949) were
added. In 1971 the municipal
border was established, with the
exception of Hansta. In 1982 that
area was bought by Stockholm
from Sollentuna and is now a
nature reserve.
