ACTIVE
RECREATION
\
Helsinki is close to the sea
and surrounded by nature,
which means there is
always something active
to do in the city.

\
Helsinki has a reputation
for hosting international
sporting events. In 1952,
after the World War, the
Olympic Games were held
here. The city also played
host to the first ever World
Championships in Athletics
in 1983 and was the first
to host it a second time
in 2005. In 2009 the city
hosted the European Figure
Skating Championships,
and the Helsinki Marathon
is a constant fixture that
has taken place every
year since 1980.
\
Other sports recreation
that residents of Helsinki
enjoy include bowling,
swimming, horse riding, and
boating, canoeing, sailing,
fishing, golf, tennis, and all
of the usual Nordic winter
sports. And with 490 km of
recreation trails in Helsinki,
the city is also a haven for
trekkers and cyclists.
