Thursday, November 5th, 2015 Grades 3-5: Michael Mahoney and Kitty Rutherford Thursday 11:30-12:15 in Oak C Come explore common mathematical misconceptions that hinder student’s conceptual understanding. Avoid quick fixes and short cuts and learn strategies that build a solid foundation to develop mathematical thinkers. Examples of test items will demonstrate how misconceptions can impede student achievement. Grades K-2: Addressing Myths and Misconceptions with Tier II Students Thursday, November 5th, 2015 Denise Schulz and Matt Hoskins Thursday 12:30-2:00 in Auditorium II This session will address how to dispel some common myths and misconceptions about teaching and learning mathematics. Through the use of effective mathematics teaching practices and research-based tier II instructional strategies, educators can avoid some of the common pitfalls when introducing students to problem solving. Special attention will be paid to the development of conceptual understanding to support procedure, which will generalize as a student progresses to more complex subject matter. Principles to Actions DPI Sessions Friday, November 5th, 2015 Ensuring Math Success for All Grades K-2: Denise Schulz, Kitty Rutherford and Shelly Alford Friday 10:30-12:00 in Auditorium III Come experience the action required to ensure that all students become mathematical thinkers and are prepared for any academic career or professional path they choose. Principles to Actions from NCTM sets forth a set of strongly recommended, research-informed actions for all teachers, coaches, and specialist in mathematics. North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (DPI) updates will also be given in this session.
