September/October 2015
Volume 2, Issue 1
Greetings from the NCDPI Elementary Mathematics Consultants,
Welcome Back to School Elementary Mathematics Friends.
Another year of making a difference for the students in North
Carolina. We hope your school year is off to a great start. We want
to share some updates about DPI elementary mathematics.
Please make sure you visit the mathematics wiki:

3-5 Unpacking Documents have been revised – always look in the bottom right hand corner of
the document to see if you have the latest version. You can also look at the revision table and
make revisions to your already printed document.
3-5 Formative Instructional and Assessment Tasks for the Common Core State Standards
in Mathematics have been compiled and can now be accessed in one document on the
mathematics wiki.
5th Grade Lessons for Learning Document will include four additional volume lessons. This
updated document will be posted on the mathematics wiki by the end of October.
2014-2015 K-2 Mid-Year and Summative Assessments have been revised and released. They
are now posted on the math wiki.
2015-2016 K-2 Mid-Year Assessments have a new look this year. The mid-year assessment
should be formative and guide classroom instruction. When scoring student work, the rubric
should assist teachers in identifying student needs. Rubric proficiency levels for the mid-year are
“Not Yet”, “Progressing”, and “Meets Standard”. These assessment documents now includes
“Next Steps” for each task and each level of proficiency to help teachers with instructional
decisions as they move students forward with mathematics thinking. District leaders will have
access to 2015-2016 assessments mid-October. There will also be a webinar describing the
changes and answering questions regarding K-2 Math Assessments at the beginning of November.
