ow tide. And no, this is not an article about the latest craft beer
brewery on Johns Island. For most seaside residents, low tide is
the least attractive time of the day. The swampy, stinky smell of
seaweed, marsh grass, and picked-over shellfish often overwhelms
the ordinarily fresh aroma of salt. Most folks can’t wait for a rapid return of
the waters to fill our marshes and tidal streams. For some of the smartest and
most-cherished inhabitants of the Kiawah River, however, the approach of low
tide signals the start of one of the unique feeding practices in the entire world:
