Visitors and residents are always encouraged to take the time to walk the pathways and learn about the possibilities of working with beautiful native plants . Partnering with the Conservancy , the Kiawah Island Golf Resort donated the land and continues to assist with maintenance . The Town of Kiawah Island ’ s bird banding station on Little Bear Island continues to be an important part of extensive research about birds on Kiawah . With his team of select graduate student interns , Town biologist Aaron Given bands birds from August through November to learn more about the birds and the role the Island plays in fall bird migration The Conservancy has long supported this research .
The Heron Park Nature Center , part of the Kiawah island Golf Resort , is central to learning about the wildlife of Kiawah Island . Programs there include everything from photography walks to boat trips on the river to Mingo Point exploration for junior naturalists . The Conservancy often works with the naturalists from the Nature Center , and our summer Conservation Matters programs are often joint productions .
The Conservancy ’ s multi-year alligator research continues under the direction of Thomas Rainwater , PhD , research scientist , and wildlife research coordinator from Clemson University . The Town of Kiawah Island and the Kiawah Community Association have also initiated a joint study focusing on the movement of our alligator population around the Island and are conducting their research in conjunction with the Conservancy .
