The Junior Naturalists program at the Heron Park Nature
Center is a highlight of the summer for many young visitors.
On Mondays they learn about and feed the animals. Oliver
and Maddie learned important lessons about caring for
and feeding an assortment of animals including box turtles,
snakes, and American alligators.
The highlight of their adventure was the opportunity to
interact with the two baby raccoons currently being raised at
the Nature Center. The mother raccoon tossed the babies out
70
right after they were born and naturalists at the Nature Center
have been caring for them ever since. They are preparing
them to be released into the wild.
On Tuesdays the program highlight is a boat trip from
Mingo Point to the Kiawah River where participants watch
for dolphins, use seines and casting nets to discover the rich
assortment of sea life in nearby waters, and study the shells
along the shore. NK
