n January 28, 2014, Kiawah Island along with most of the rest of
the Deep South, was hit hard when Winter Storm Leon roared into
town. Leon was the first major winter storm in our area since 1993,
and before that 1973, so it’s not something we deal with often or
well. Here in the Charleston area we were fortunate that the storm delivered its
full fury after most people were safely home for the day and schools had long been
closed. Not so for our friends in nearby Atlanta, where the storm peaked mid-day,
causing many children to spend the night at school or on busses due to congested
roads or parents stuck in 12-hour traffic jams.
