Naturally Kiawah Magazine Volume 33 | Page 69

In the Next Issue … A few years ago former Conservancy CEO John Burris noted that the people of Kiawah Island come from a multitude of far flung places but ultimately share what he aptly termed “common ground.” We may indeed have followed different paths to get here, but we are so fortunate to have eventually found such a special place. None of us grew up here, nor did our parents or grandparents; its habitats may be ancient, but its residents are very recent arrivals. We have all come to love and respect this island we call home, and we look forward to getting to know it better still. The more we understand it, the better we can preserve it for future generations. In our next issue, we will focus on the major habitats of this island we love so well. Of the nine major habitats identified in Dr. Joel Grambling’s 2011 study, we will feature four: •• Maritime Forest •• Marsh •• Dunes •• Beach So in the coming months, take a moment to be especially aware of where you are and what you see. We’ll be looking too! Our issue will address the wildlife of these various habitats, the plants which thrive in them, and the specific elements of natural beauty each represents. If you have ideas you would like us to explore or special places you want to tell others about, please let us hear from you: [email protected].
