Fifth-grade students are learning on the job

ifth-grade homework may actually be a
walk in the park on special occasions. For
60 students from Angel Oak Elementary
School that is exactly what it was in October
of 2014. Their assignment included not only learning about
ecosystems but also using iPads to photograph examples
and compose a presentation. To accomplish all this, two
teachers from Angel Oak added a team of volunteers from the
Kiawah Island Photography Club to participate in a program
presented by Yo Art! of Charleston.
This science project began with a field trip to Kiawah
Island’s Heron Park Nature Center for a lesson by naturalists
Marcie Palm and Kristen Lococo. The students toured Night
Heron Park then moved to the beach to distinguish between
biotic and abiotic factors (living vs. nonliving) taking plenty
of pictures as they walked. Just to make the project even more
