No discussion of our favorite things about Kiawah Island would be complete without mention of
the Kiawah Conservancy’s magazine – Naturally Kiawah. So we include it here as number 107.
The Kiawah Conservancy celebrated its 16th anniversary in 2013 and the magazine, if viewed
from its first issue to this one, reflects the progress we have made. We have evolved from a small
“newsletter” to the substantial publication you hold in your hands today.
The Kiawah Conservancy embraces all that is beautiful and natural about our Island. At the
same time we are all so aware of how lucky we are to live here. We recognize that part of our
great good fortune must be accompanied by development of the Island. And so we strive every
day to find ways to balance that development with maintaining and enhancing the living beauty
of the Island. We put up curtains but we always keep an eye on the palmettos. Our magazine is
an ever-present testimony to the efforts all Kiawah property owners are making to be certain that
this wonderful place will remain so for generations to come.
We are proud of what Naturally Kiawah has become and look forward to our next issue:
Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow on Kiawah. We will take a look back at the Island as it was in
decades past, examine where we are today and attempt to envision where we will be in the years
to come. This coming issue will feature a report from the Kiawah Conservancy’s Environmental
Science Committee, a project that has been underway for almost two years, examining the
1975 study undertaken by the original developers of the Island with details about the scientists
involved and recommendations for projects arising from that research for the future. We invite
you to be part of this next issue. We want your memories of “The Way It Was.” Contact

As we contemplate this next issue we also want to pause to recognize Suzanne Taylor, our
fabulous Naturally Kiawah editor-in-chief and all around great person, who has shepherded
the magazine to the quality publication it has become. She has lead with her quiet yet strong
spirit, done every imaginable task with energy and good humor and succeeded in publishing a
wonderful testimony to the beauty of life on Kiawah. Thank you Suzanne for sharing your time
and incredible talent with us!
