At night the building’s internal volumes are exposed
as one of the many layers of the building’s elegant
geometry.
with its travertine skin and round plan is the primary
feature of the interior around which the two secondary
volumes are organized. A forest of columns and elevated
walkways with views towards the central drum of the
assembly act to further stress the importance of the
assembly hall.
The use of travertine throughout the plan gives character
to the main assembly hall showing the importance of
public gathering and governance as important symbolic
features of the architecture. The surfaces of travertine
in the interior’s clean geometry oriented towards the
main assembly hall are a meaningful presence in the
experience of the building to all visitors. This strategy
by the architect and client identifies the role of civic
government within the building as an important feature
in parallel to the many administrative and service
functions provided by the municipality. While walking
through the building visitors are constantly aware of
the presence of the round assembly hall as the center of
government achieved through the use of travertine. This
building a pioneer in ecological architecture for public
buildings in Turkey shows the advanced vision of the
Mayor Aziz Yeniay and the architect Mutlu Çilingiroğlu in
working progressively towards a harmonious union of
society and government in Turkey.
