Yeni camilere
ihtiyaç duyulduğunda bu yapılar çoğunlukla Osmanlı

olarak inşa edildiler. Sancaklar Camisi’nin tasarım

the application of stone to distinguish various volumes of the building in
what we can label as a strategy of “material morphology”. This architecture
is characterized by the use of individual materials to give character and
distinguish key elements in a building’s morphology.
Located in Büyükçekmece, one of the new suburban neighborhoods in
the outskirts of Istanbul, the Sancaklar Mosque is adjacent to a series
of gated residential communities in a low-density urban environment.
The Mosque is hidden from view as it departs from the standard mosque
architecture to blend in with the topography of the rolling hills of the area.
This part of Istanbul like so many of the new construction in the outskirts of
the city is fairly undistinguished. In this way the Mosque’s architecture takes
on extra meaning not only as a comment on the area and Istanbul urbanism
today but also as religious architecture.
More so it creatively reinterprets the fundamentals and ornamental aspects
of traditional mosque architecture that has lacked for any advanced examples
in the modern period. Looking back to historical examples for religious
architecture in the modern era in Turkey it was not possible for the architects
to extend these typologies such that they were largely ignored by Turkish
architects after the establishment of the Turkish Republic. When new mosques
were needed they were mostly constructed based on transformations of
Ottoman and Seljuk architectural prototypes. In addressing this history, the
design process leading to the Sancaklar Mosque the architects noted that
their designs aim to address the fundamental issues of mosque architecture
by distancing themselves from the architectural discussions based on form to
instead concentrate only on the essence of religious space.
