with one of the sites main constraints – no direct vehicular
access as access is gained through a pedestrian square to
the east. The ‘visual atrium’ acts as a magnet, drawing in
passers by through its spatiality and refraction of sunlight
during the day and the accent of lights at night.
The central feature of the building is its massive and
modulated limestone façade. This exterior wall forms a
fundamental part of this building position in the urban
fabric. Studies were undertaken very early on in the design
process to envisage how best to control the light levels
within the building and the glare on the east and west
facades. The architect’s design uses deep walls that provide
thermal massing, and a lively, varied geometric pattern
of openings in the facade to provide sun protection and
privacy from the adjacent residential buildings where it is
needed, while maintaining an overall unity of appearance.
A key element of cooling is thermal mass. The adopted
strategy here that refers to local tradition was to use the
building envelope as a heat sink to even out temperature
fluctuations and optimize thermal comfort. This works
by choosing a material profile that slowly absorbs and
stores the heat during the day, and then uses diurnal
patterns to release it to the cool night air. This evens out
temperature fluctuations, which itself helps improve
perceived thermal comfort. Honed natural limestone was
