Can Çinici, caminin tasarım
Can Çinici halen 1963 senesinde Altuğ ve Behruz Çinici
tarafından kurulan Çinici Mimarlık’ın yürütücülüğünü
sürdürüyor. ODTÜ Mimarlık mezunu olan Çinici,
eğitimine Londra Architectural Association’da devam
etti. Halen birçok üniversitede stüdyo yürütücüğülü
yapıyor ve çeşitli sergilere katılıyor. Birçok ödüle
layık görülen Çinici Mimarlık, hızlı büyümekte olan
kentlerde mimarlık etiği ve sürdürebilir tasarım
anlayışında ürünleriyle oldukça geniş bir portfolyaya
sahip. ODTÜ Mimarlık Bölümü öğretim görevlisi
Zeynep Mennan ile birlikte hayata geçirdikleri mezar
projeleri de tasarımlarının düşünsel boyutunun ne
kadar zengin olduğunu bizlere gösteriyor.

Today in Turkey contemporary architectural debates on religious buildings are focused on
mosques especially towards the society’s conservative view towards the use of non-traditional
architectural forms in mosque design. Within these debates, The Grand National Assembly of
Turkey (TBMM) Mosque, by Behruz Çinici and Can Çinici constructed in 1990 and awarded the Aga
Khan Award for Architecture in 1995 brought new insight to the forms of mosque architecture.
The TBMM Mosque is one of the most prominent modern buildings in Turkey with its modernist
approach and distinctive abstract yet symbolic forms that included the re-interpretation of
traditional architectural features such as ‘mihrab’ and ceiling decoration. Can Çinici describes
their design strategy for the TBMM as a straightforward effort in spatial planning, “We had
architectural concerns, not religious ones. We chose to reinterpret the traditional architectural
features to experience the space better. Additionally, we were not under pressure in designing for
a mosque. We just had architectural concerns.”
Can Çinici is currently the lead architect of Çinici Architects, Istanbul, that was established in 1963
by Altuğ and Behruz Çinici. After graduating from Middle East Technical University (METU), Can
Çinici continued his education at the Architectural Association in London. As a practice, Çinici
