Madrid practice A-cero, consisting of the partners Joaquin Torres and Rafael Llamazares may be evaluated in the context of the importance of a detailed client brief in the design process. Because in this case the marble clad façade that dominates the building’s architecture was not only specified by the client but also further detailed as a white marble Marmol Crema Real Blanco that should be used as the major feature. Using this as their starting point A-cero transformed this request from the brief by implementing a dramatic yet logical use of natural stone in the house design. A-cero established by Joaquín Torres in Madrid in 1996 is a successful practice whose architecture and urban design services is centered in Spain but also have established an international clientele in far flung locations such as North Africa, Dubai and the Dominican Republic. Buildings with direct and clear forms where material treatment is emphasized is typical of Spanish architecture of the last two decades and representative of A-Cero’s architecture especially in their numerous residential projects. Typical of their work is the Marble and Bamboo house, a project where the client took an active role in the design process creating the basis for the architectural strategy. The site of the house is an upper class suburban area in northern Madrid that is the location for many similar modernist houses including those by A-cero.
