LEED GOLD CERTIFICATE.
In addition to the decision to balance bold forms and
materials, the project is notable for its sustainable
design consciousness. To create a serene atmosphere,
water features are incorporated into long stone benches
that wrap alongside the green mounds. This enables
a playful and tactile experience throughout the urban
square. The sustainable features of the project include
steep angulated green mounds that create 1.45 times
more green space than level planters. In addition, water
consumption is reduced by vertical planting, maximizing
100% of the irrigation moisture. With all these
sustainable features, the project succeeds in creating
an effective microclimate between the structures of the
existing built environment and ecology of the desert
climate. In terms of an ambient experience, lighting
elements focus on the trees and the marble seating
elements to further define their sharp outlines in the
evening. After sunset, the illuminated trees also serve to
define walking paths in the large city square.
This innovative sustainable design by Martha Schwartz
Partners has resulted in a GOLD LEED certificate at the
project’s completion in 2012. As we are accustomed to
noting big-scale urban design projects especially in
the north from European countries, the emergence of
this kind of urban practice in the south in the Arabian
Peninsula is refreshing. In this respect, Sowwah Square
provides a distinctive urban experience in an area
of the world where urbanism and ecology are finally
starting to mature.

Martha Schwartz Partners tarafından tasarlanan bu çok yönlü yenilikçi
proje, bütün bu özellikleriyle 2012‘de tamamlanır tamamlanmaz ödül
aldı. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), ABD Yeşil
Bina Konseyi tarafından geliştirilen, tasarım ve uygulama aşamalarıyla
sürdürülebilirlik anlamında öncü yapılar için geliştirilmiş bir puanlama
sistemine verilen genel bir isim. LEED puanlama sürecinde yapıların
inşaat ve kullanım süreçleri açısından çevresel etkilerini puanlayan beş
farklı çevresel etki kategorisi bulunmakta. Puanlama tamamlandıktan
sonra sertifika seviyesini belirleyen LEED sisteminde, 100 üzerinden 6079 puan aralığı Altın Sertifika’ya karşılık geliyor.
Büyük ölçekte kentsel tasarım projelerinin genelde Avrupa
ülkelerinden (çoğunlukla İskandinav ülkelerinden) geldiği
günümüzde, böylesine bir kentsel deneyimin Arap Yarımadası’nda
ortaya çıkması son derece umut veren bir gelişme. Birkaç ay önce
tamamlanan Sowwah Meydanı, sıcak iklimli Abu Dabi’de bile ayırt
edilebilir bir kentsel deneyim sunuyor.
