Romanesque cathedral is composed of. For Campo Baeza,
the choice of the sandstone also establishes a symbolic
link with the religious building through the concept of the
hortus conclusus, a protected garden of a convent inside
which the community of nuns lives and works that now
applies to the civic work of the community. Use of the
same Zamora sandstone to pave the courtyard within the
walls, coordinated with the color of the cement inside
the offices, lends harmony to the design, openly defined
in its horizontal and vertical surfaces. Massive stone slabs
echoing the masonry techniques of the Romanesque
architecture measuring 2.5 x 1.5 meters and 50 cm deep
form walls that are only occasionally interrupted to offer
views of the city while trees grow out of the pavement in a
reference to the previous convent garden.
The architectural program of the interior is typical for
an office building. The lawyers’ offices, secondary
administration zone, technical rooms and common spaces
such as the library are located on the entrance level;
the consultants’ zone, executive and assistants offices
and other common spaces such as waiting and meeting
rooms are located on the second floor; and lastly the roof
floor was designed as a terrace for the adjacent meeting
and communal rooms. Despite the regular hierarchical
arrangement vertically there is a noticeable lack of
separation between spaces horizontally. In plan there is
a marked fluidity in these sequentially grouped rooms
where spaces flow into one another.
The sense of space and air is realized by the discrete
design of the glass box with a double façade. The
sheets of glass that make up the exterior of the twostorey building are joined by little more than structural
silicone. “It’s as if the walls are entirely made of air,”
declares Campo Baeza. Glass fins separate the outer
glass skin from an inner glass wall in front of the floor
plates, creating a void that mimics the proportions of a
solid wall.
