Projeler/Projects: İstanbul was implemented on küfeki stone via CNC (Computer Numerical Control) technique, where the drawings given to computers are submitted as solid models that are cut by computer driven steel cutting heads. The use of küfeki stone enabled an easier application of CNC with a softer stone type as well as reducing material costs for Boran Ekinci Architects in this adaptation of modern methods to traditional motifs. Belkıs Apartments consists of an office floor on the basement level; a café on the ground and first levels and 13 flats situated on different levels (the floors between 4 and 8 have views towards the Golden Horn). A single flat occupies the 8th floor, with a roof terrace offering a panoramic view of the city. The vertical circulation elements like stairs and elevators (including the fire escape) as well as the wet spaces are placed in the back part of the main volume in order to allow the living spaces to directly face the Golden Horn. In terms of public space, a performance area is planned for the adjacent Şimal Steps for various entertainment and social activities. Although this program has yet to come to life, the transparent façade reflects the bustling urban life on these steps and its surroundings flowing inside the space of the café. Beyoğlu has always been an architectural hub, containing masterpieces whose stone façades have showcased exquisite craftsmanship since the Ottoman period. For centuries, the stone and cement architectural ornaments on these façades, were cut or formed by hand, frame by frame, element by element by local craftsmen. Today, Boran Ekinci’s Belkıs Apartments uses the current technology of CNC to design a beautiful façade paying respect to historic precedents with a design flair that is clearly contemporary. The Belkıs Apartments, inspired by the architectural history of the area, utilizes the latest techniques to adapt contemporary tastes into a new urban character that is an important benchmark for downtown Beyoğlu and the rest of Istanbul.
