Sanat/Art: Fabio Viale
şekillendiriyor. Viale, hayalinde canlandırdığı
şekilleri gerçeğe dünüştürmesini sağlayan mermerle
yapamayacağı hiçbir şey olmadığını, bu yüzden
malzeme olarak ondan vazgeçemediğini söylüyor.
Kağıt, plastik gibi basit malzemelerden üretilen tipik
eşyaları mermerden üreten Viale’nin heykellerinin
malzemesini dokunmadan anlamak imkansız.
Fabio Viale sıradan nesneleri mermer heykellere
dönüştürerek zihnimizdeki ‘normallik’ fikriyle oynuyor.
‘’İnsanların fikirlerini sanatı kullanarak değiştirmekle
ilgileniyorum.’’ diyen Viale, ‘’Bu yeni bir yöne doğru,
yeni bir kapı açmaktır. Sanatın amacı da budur.’’
diye ekliyor. Viale ‘’Mermer benim tuvalim.’’ diyor,
‘’İstediğim şekli alabilen bir beyaz malzeme.’’
Souvenir Giaconda heykelinde, Mona Lisa resminin
fluluğunu heykele yansıtmak istediğini belirtiyor.
Heykelde oluşturması imkansız gibi görünen bu algıyı,
tüm dokuyu strafora benzeterek çözmüş. Tüm sert
köşeler, baloncuklarla yumuşatılarak belirsizleştiriliyor.
Sanatçı, konturlar net olmadığı için bu heykelde
herkesin kendi Mona Lisa’sını görebileceğini belirtiyor.
İlüzyonu daha da pekiştirmek üzere Viale’nin
heykelleri taklit ettikleri malzemelere has kokuları
taşıyor. Sonsuzluk sembolüne benzer şekilde birbirine
geçen otomobil lastikleri, lastiğin karakteristik
kokusuna sahip.
Şubat ayında New York’ta gerçekleştiren sanatçının
çalışmaları, teknik ustalığın günümüz sanatında
öneminin koruduğunun da bir ispatı...

the procedure of working with marble know that it is not easy to handle as
it requires both mental and physical efforts by the artist from the moment
that the idea is conceived to its realization. Des pite its difficulty in handling,
there is a translucency in the material that gives any marble sculpture a
visual depth beyond its surface and this evokes a certain realism in the
works created. This is the case with Fabio Viale, as his works do not seem to
be created from bulky marble but rather seem like they have been created
by lightweight styrofoam. To further the illusion, some of Viale’s works carry
distinct odors, characteristic of the materials that they mimic; for example
his automobile tires have a distinct smell of rubber.
Viale cites human memory and history as inspirations within his work.
History and memory are explored in many of Viale’s works. He creates
sculptures from fragments of historically important and famous statues, such
as Michelangelo’s David and the torso of the ancient god, Kuros, which are
then covered in ‘tattoos’. These ‘tattoos’, inspired by a trip to Russia, are
indicative of labor camp and prison tattoo designs, featuring inscriptions
like ‘God is with Us’, ‘I’ll Die Soon’, ‘The Sickle and the Hammer’, as well as
winged skulls, the cross and other religious and mythic symbols.
Viale works alone, using machinery to roughly carve blocks of marble, and
finishing the sculpture by hand. He explores all the possibilities of marble.
He exploits and yet respects its physical nature. The themes present in Viale’s
work are in constant transformation as the artist continuously seeks new
sources from the classically inspired. A subtle irony runs through all his work.
