The front façade of the multi-purpose
room reflects the image of the main neoclassic colonnade entrance of the existing
National Museum by repeating the use of
stone columns in a contemporary design
idiom. In line with the museum typology
the architecture should be solid and rigid
while being welcoming and transparent. The
architect’s façade studies are inspired by the
rigidity of stone, but also by the porosity that
its texture offers. Abillama states that it is an
ongoing research aiming at finding the right
balance between solid and void.
As a massing, the National Museum
Extension has different areas which include
a multipurpose room and a café along
with a bar/ kitchen and security zone. The
multipurpose room is accessed through
existing stairs, which lead to a spacious
platform and aligned with AbdallahYafi Street.
The lateral facades of the multipurpose room
are solid to offer blind walls for artwork.
Whereas the back facade offers glimpses
of transparency with views towards the
Hippodrome, the main façade is fully glazed
to offer the opportunity to connect interior
and exterior spaces. The interior of the café
is predominantly composed of glass to
increase light circulation and transparency
to offer generous views to the adjacent
Beirut Hippodrome while contrasting with
the lateral solid facades of the multipurpose
room. Damascus Street is used as main public
entrance, while AbdallahYafi Street is used a
service entrance.
