A glittering jewel in its multi-faceted crown , Nantucket ’ s newly-designated Cultural District showcases the wealth of artistic , cultural and historic diversity nestled in the heart of Downtown . From art galleries and theaters to retail shops , world-class restaurants , and magnificent architectural gems , a veritable cultural wonderland is encompassed in 28 scenic , strollable blocks . In fact , Travel & Leisure dubbed our iconic cobblestone thoroughfare one of America ’ s Greatest Main Streets , and the island has received numerous accolades from National Geographic to the Travel Channel for its pristine natural beauty .
Despite its diminutive size , Nantucket ’ s bustling Core area boasts four theater venues , five historic churches , thriving community centers , as well as a worldrenowned Whaling Museum , the Maria Mitchell Aquarium , Artists ’ Association , and our venerable library , the Atheneum . Popular annual festivals and myriad activities abound , contributing to the ongoing vibrancy of the Downtown .
