Nantucket has a legendary history of maritime pursuits, and its three majestic lighthouses
guarding the island’s northern tip, eastern shoreline and harbor evoke a time when
Nantucketers harvested the sea. These proud sentinels symbolize the confluence of past and
present, and have witnessed decades of history as the island evolved from “Whaling Capital
of the World” to a premier vacation resort. Great Point Light, Sankaty Head Light and Brant
Point Light all played important roles in guiding sailors home, with their bright beacons leading
vessels safely around the shoals and through the fog.
Located on the northern tip of the island,
Great Point Light overlooks miles of pristine
conservation land and beaches favored by bird
watchers, picnickers, and surfcasters. Sankaty
Head Lighthouse, high atop Sankaty Bluff,
overlooks one of Nantucket’s finest golf
courses and, due to erosion, was moved back
from the bluff in 2007. As you arrive in the
harbor, you’re welcomed by the familiar sight
of Brant Point Lighthouse, the second
lighthouse built in America, and the lowest
light in New England at 26 feet above sea level.
