There is a lovely garden adjacent to the Atheneum on India Street, as well as a number of “pocket parks” scattered throughout Town. Children’s Beach, Jetties Beach, Lily Pond, Nantucket Elementary School, Tom Nevers Field and the Nantucket Airport all feature playgrounds for children. The Skateboard Park on Backus Lane (off Surfside Road) is a very popular spot for teens and ‘tweens. The Elementary School playground also features a soccer pitch. Tuppancy Links, Sanford Farm, and the cranberry bogs off Milestone Road are also terrific spots for long, leisurely walks. Exploration Station is a play center at 135 Old South Road featuring a science-themed dream space for children 2.9-8 years old. Inspired by children’s museums, Exploration Station is filled with exciting and interesting activities and art stations. What does ACK mean? ACK is the Federal Aviation Administration’s official three-letter code for Nantucket Memorial Airport, taken from letters in the word Nantucket. The US government uses “N” for military airport installations. Thus, Nantucket and Washington’s National Airport use ACK and DCA rather than NAN and NAT.
