Where can I find
parks/playgrounds for children?
There is a lovely garden adjacent to the
Atheneum on India Street, as well as
a number of “pocket parks” scattered
throughout Town. Children’s Beach,
Jetties Beach, Lily Pond, Nantucket
Elementary School, Tom Nevers Field
and the Nantucket Airport all feature
playgrounds for children. The Skateboard
Park on Backus Lane (off Surfside Road) is
a very popular spot for teens and ‘tweens.
The Elementary School playground also
features a soccer pitch. Tuppancy Links,
Sanford Farm, and the cranberry bogs off
Milestone Road are also terrific spots for
long, leisurely walks. Exploration Station
is a play center at 135 Old South Road
featuring a science-themed dream space
for children 2.9-8 years old. Inspired by
children’s museums, Exploration Station
is filled with exciting and interesting
activities and art stations.
What does ACK mean?
ACK is the Federal Aviation Administration’s official three-letter code for
Nantucket Memorial Airport, taken from
letters in the word Nantucket. The US
government uses “N” for military airport
installations. Thus, Nantucket and Washington’s National Airport use ACK and
DCA rather than NAN and NAT. ACK has
become “shorthand” or slang when
referring to Nantucket.
Do I need a car on Nantucket?
It is not necessary to bring a car to
Nantucket. Bicycles are popular means
of transportation, and there are paved
bike paths leading to all ends of the
island. Rental vehicles and taxis are also
available, and the Nantucket Regional
Transit Authority provides island-wide
seasonal shuttle service. Traffic congestion
is a growing concern among visitors and
residents alike. Fewer cars on Nantucket’s
streets and roads will mean a more
tranquil vacation experience for everyone!
