Ministers who lead what are known
as “mega churches” have pews and
offering plates that overflow Sunday
after Sunday. These pastors can boast
members who have both financial
resources and willingness to fund
all the ministry, outreach, and
operating budgets a mega church has.
I commend them for the work they
do, but my greatest admiration goes
to those pastors and ministers in the
trenches who make great impact with
little-to-no resources. They don’t think
twice about rolling their sleeves up
and getting their hands and minds
dirty working with people so mired
in darkness that they can’t see even a
sliver of light.
I, Naleighna Kai, was one of those people. In my youth, I endured physical
and sexual abuse at the hands of three different family members. That
abuse affected my life in such a way that I questioned if there actually was a
God. People who go through the kind of abuse I suffered left an imprint for
decades. Some even take it with them to the grave. Thankfully, that wasn’t
the case with me. I met a powerful woman who would be instrumental in
changing my life and helping me to heal.
Sesvalah is her name. It means “she who heals with the seeds from the
mother earth.” And believe me when I tell you that she lives up to her
