MARCH Read some more National Read Across America Day is March 2. Reading with your child everyday is important, but make this day extra special by having the entire family read to each other. Turn off the TV and computer, put away the cell phones, and get out the books! Get ready for test day Many schools will begin standardized testing this month or next. Make a note of the schedule on your family calendar so you can be sure your children get a good night’s sleep and eat a healthy breakfast on test days. Don’t have time to cook? Your child’s cafeteria offers breakfast and lunch daily. APRIL Go a little greener Commemorate Earth Day on April 22 by planning an activity for your entire family, such as joining a local park’s litter clean-up team or planting a tree on your block. Share your career Lots of parents and kids will participate in “Take Your Child to Work Day” on April 23, but why not teach your child’s entire class about your job? PREPARING FOR STAAR The night before... • Go over positive test taking tips. • Say positive things and compliment frequently –Acknowledge that tests are designed to be hard, but doing your best is what counts. • Practice questions and problems that have been difficult. • Get a full night’s rest. The morning of... • Eat a good breakfast – Studies show students that eat a light breakfast with lots of protein perform higher on standardized tests. • Dress your child comfortably for any temperature. • Be on time. • Remind your child to read all directions carefully before making a selection and always double check your answers. MAY JUNE Get a move on It’s National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, and your child may soon be participating in your school’s field day. Prep your child and improve your family’s overall health and wellness with some family recreation activities. Take walks after dinner, go on a weekend bike ride, or have chin-up contests on the monkey bars at a nearby playground. Keep kids safe The weather has warmed u
