As the manager of an animal welfare organization, I am often
asked by animal lovers, “What can I do, personally, to stop
the suffering of animals?” The answer is easy. Sterilize your
animals and encourage everyone you know to do the same. The
unchecked reproduction of domestic animals is the number one
cause of their suffering at the hands of humans and it is entirely
preventable.
Here are some great reasons to spay (female) or neuter (male)
your pet from the perspective of animal welfare:

females, sterilization
reduces aggressive
behavior. Males and
females seeking a sex
partner will fight more
and will also need to
wander away from home
more than sterilized
animals. Remove the
interest of sex, and your
pet will become calmer
and less likely to roam,
thus preventing fights
and the chance of road
accidents and theft.
