Soufriere Hills
Volcano
Seeing the Soufriere Hills Volcano from any vantage point on the island is a
sobering experience. This is still an active volcano, but since 2013, has remained
silent. In 1995, a massive eruption occurred, killing 19 people and rendering
the southern part of the island uninhabitable. This area remains covered by the
pyroclastic flows and tours of the “Buried City” with certified guides are quite
popular. The mass exodus of people from the island following the 1995 eruption
has resulted in a dwindled population of just under 5,000, but this adds to the
cozy feel the island offers to visitors.
