The Editor says . . . The Caribbean is undeniably a gigantic mélange of diversity. Multiculturalism is evident in all of the islands, especially so when various traditions are being observed. From its original inhabitants, to the European settlers, African slaves and indentured servants, remnants of their influence and culture still remains. One place in the Caribbean region where this mélange can easily be seen is the country of Belize. Once known as British Honduras, it is located in Central America but can boast of being Caribbean as the east side of the country borders the Caribbean Sea. It is the only English-speaking country in Central America. Belize’s landscape is punctuated with reminders of its Maya civilization. The country’s many caves also give testament to its history and restaurant menus proudly reflect the many ethnic groups that now call this country home. In this issue, Belize’s Director of Tourism, Mrs Karen Bevans, takes us on an enlightening journey through her country, giving us an intimate look into what makes it so appealing to visitors. Happy Reading.
