PLACES OF INTEREST
Derek Walcott Square
Named after the island’s Nobel Laureate in 1993, this is a great place to start a tour of the island’s
capital, Castries. It was once called Place d’Armes, when the island was under French rule. It
was renamed Columbus Square in 1893 then in 1993, was given the name of the island’s Nobel
Laureate. This square is a huge tourist attraction and draws many who are seeking a few minutes
of rest during a day’s hectic activities. One of its attractions is the large Saman tree which is
believed to be over 400 years old. This is a scenic, restful stop in the middle of Castries.
