Statia Day
November 16th is a national holiday on St. Eustatius, “The Golden Rock”.
This is a day of celebration for the island and a day to reflect on their
cultural heritage and history. Statia Day not only re-visits what it means to
be of St. Eustatius heritage, but it is also a time of proud reflection on the
role the island played in 1776, when it officially recognized the new United
States of America as an independent country. Statia was the very first
foreign nation to do so! On this day, St. Eustatius also adopted its flag and
coat of arms.
A day reserved for historical and cultural reflection ensures the island’s
compelling history remains in the minds of generations to come. Observed
officially at Fort Oranje, Statia Day is marked by a parade of uniformed
community groups and officials with government-offciated ceremonies and
speeches. Indeed, it is a proud day for islanders.
So significant is this day, that celebrations actually begin one week leading
up to November 16th. There are regattas, parties, events for the kids, sports,
games, parades and cultural performances - something everyone on the
island, including visitors can be a part of.
Statia Day on November 16th is a great time to visit The Golden Rock. A
historical and cultural awakening awaits.
