Toledo District has over 50 villages in the
surrounding countryside and more than 30 are
Maya communities. Some villages are mainly
Mopan, some mainly Kekchi and some are
mixed, and most still maintain the institution
of an Alcalde who oversees community life.
San Antonio is the largest Mopan Maya village
in the area and it is one of a group of villages
offering home stays for tourists. Each village will
have something different to offer in the way
of traditional activities–maybe even chocolate
making, however, wherever you stay, you will get
a traditionally warm welcome.
