Shark Ray
Alley
In the warm, crystal waters of
the Hol Chan Marine Reserve
off Ambergris Caye in an
appropriately named section
known as Shark Ray Alley, nurse
sharks and rays gather when
boats approach, with the eager
expectation of being fed. They
are usually joined in the water
by fearless tourists for photo
and feeding opportunities. The
sharks were initially introduced
to this way of life by fishermen
who would stop in the area
to clean their catch, thereby
providing spoils for the local
rays and sharks in the area. This
awakened appetite has resulted
in eager, expectant followers
whenever boats draw near.
