PLYMOUTH MYSTERY TOMBSTONE
A tombstone with the cryptic inscription “she was a mother without knowing it and a wife
without letting her husband know it except by her kind indulgences to him” located in the
sleepy village of Plymouth, has become a national landmark. The tombstone belongs to Betty
Stiven who died in 1783. It has remained a talking point for islanders and now the mysterious
inscription also captures the imagination of visitors to the island.
