PLACES OF INTEREST in Nevis

Fort Charles
Fort Charles was built in 1630 to protect
Charleston’s harbor. It was the largest of
several forts on the island. It is said that
Nevis’ sugar trade was worth more than
all the other British interests in the North
American colonies combined, so forts were
vital to protect those interests. In 1854 all
the forts were abandoned, now this one lies
in ruins with only a few of the original 24
cannons remaining in place.
