PLACES OF INTEREST in Cuba
Baracoa
The table topped hill of
El Yunque looks over the
remote town of Baracoa in
northeastern Cuba. Founded
in 1511, Baracoa is the
island’s oldest city yet it has
remained undiscovered and
untouched by tourism until
recently. Surrounded by
virgin rainforest, the town
remained cut off from the
rest of the island until a road
was built in 1960. Today
visitors can enjoy secluded
beaches, walks along the
cobbled stone streets and
perhaps a hike to the top of
El Yunque.
